Description
Assistantship
requires an approximate load of 16 hours per week. Duties are primarily as an
assigned player in university ensembles and possible coaching of brass chamber
ensembles and horn sectionals. Upon a successful audition for the conductor of
the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, membership in that ensemble's horn section will
run for the two year period of the assistantship. Graduate assistant in horn
studies with Dr. Nicholas Smith, Principal Horn with the Wichita Symphony and
Professor of Horn at Wichita State University. Only applicants seeking Master of
Music or Master of Music Education degrees need apply.
Stipend
$4,000 minimum per
school year. This stipend is pro-rated over nine months, the first payment being
in mid-September. The assistantship includes a position with the Wichita
Symphony Orchestra (by special audition). Graduate assistants are entitled to
in-state tuition privileges. Approximate value of the symphony position is $6000
to $7000 per season.

Admission and
assistantship applications may be obtained by contacting the
Coordinator of Graduate Music Studies, Wichita State University, Campus Box 53,
Wichita KS, 67260-0053. All international applicants must pass the (SPEAK) Institutional
Test for Spoken English with a score of 50. Applicants may not be considered
until admission to the Graduate School has been secured.
Interested persons are requested to submit application materials and a recent tape recording of their playing at the earliest possible date. All tapes should be no longer than twenty minutes and include both solo literature and orchestral excerpts. These tapes should be sent directly to Dr. Nicholas Smith at the above address. Applicants should be prepared to visit the campus for a personal audition/interview if so required.
ALL APPLICATION MATERIALS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED BY FEBRUARY 15th. (This includes securing admission to the Graduate School.)
